Building a US seriola industry

Use case: Assessing market potential for a new domestic aquaculture industry

Seriola quinqueradiata, commonly known as hamachi in the US, is the third most popular sashimi ingredient after salmon and tuna. Currently, almost all US imports of the fish come from small aquaculture cooperatives in southern Japan.

The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) commissioned Spheric Research to assess the potential for developing a domestic seriola aquaculture industry. Seriola is a strong candidate for land-based aquaculture and more extensive coastal farming beyond the limited production in Hawaii.

Project Highlights

  • Spheric Research interviewed more than 30 seafood industry executives
  • We also surveyed more than 800 consumers in all states about their sushi preferences and their familiarity with seriola species and other whitefish
  • NOAA plans to release the study publicly in the fourth quarter of 2025
